Listmas: Favorite Items and Weapons

Video games are home to much more than just delightful characters to control and interesting locations to explore.  No, most games just wouldn’t be complete if it weren’t for creative and useful items and weapons that make the game that much more fun.  So now, a list of some of my favorite items.  Those I can think of, that is.  And I will admit that this list is a bit biased.  By a lot.

  1. Double Hookshots, The Legend of Zelda, for grabbing items and getting to new locations, now with twice the awesome as one
  2. Hoverboots, Ratchet and Clank, for getting around in style
  3. Mr. Zurkon, Ratchet and Clank, because who doesn’t love a little robot that shoots your enemies and taunts them at the same time
  4. Groovitron, Ratchet and Clank, an item that makes enemies boogie (perhaps that’s what Captain Falcon meant when he said, “Show me your moves.”)
  5. Tanooki Suit, Super Mario Bros, because apparently raccoons can fly, and so can plumbers
  6. Phoenix Down, Final Fantasy, ‘nough said
  7. Extra lives, too. And those invincibility stars, while we’re at it.  And anything that increases your health, of course.
  8. The hammer in Super Smash Bros.
  9. Lens of Truth, The Legend of Zelda, even if it sometimes shows you scary things you didn’t want to see
  10. Din’s Fire, The Legend of Zelda, for keeping ReDeads at bay
  11. Mirror Shield, The Legend of Zelda, for also keeping ReDeads at bay

And now, I continue poetry on the topic of my obvious terror of “Zelda” characters with various limericks. Along with a game. Drum roll please. Let’s play…Guess the Monster! Guess which creatures my limericks are describing! And don’t look at the tags, you cheaters! Continue reading Zelda Limericks

A series of four ReDead haiku. Enjoy.  If you dare…  Uwa-ha-hack cough!

Haiku #1

Wrinkled old zombies

They are really just Gibdos

Without the clothes on

Haiku #2

They may be dead, but

They know how to boogie when

They’re not eating you

Haiku #3

Eyes rotted away

Mouth never closed; quit screaming

You’ll wake the neighbors

Haiku #4

Or maybe they scream

‘Cause they’re more afraid of you

Bring fire, just in case

Overlooked: The Hylian Loach

You may or may not be aware of the existence of an elusive fish in “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time”, the Hylian loach (which is actually referenced when you catch a loach in the first “Animal Crossing”). I am not certain how I came about knowledge of this particular fish, nor do I know what, if anything, you get from catching it. As far as I can tell, nothing. Nothing but the satisfaction of telling people, “Hey, guess what, I caught it.” Nevertheless, as with all secrets, once I learned about this thing, I knew I had to try my hand at catching it.

Unfortunately, I am actually better at catching fish in real life than I am in video games. Quite ironic, really, as quite the opposite is true in most situations. For example, I am far more adept at sword fighting and welding magic in video games than I am in real life. (What’s that, you aren’t able to wield magic in real life at all?) UWG Top 10: #5 – Majora’s Mask

Today, the Duck (blogger of The Duck of Indeed, of course) has the pleasure of sharing with all of you a post on the game that ranked #5 in our top 10 list, “The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask”. I was so happy to see that this game made the top 10 to begin with, as from what I understand, it’s a rather underrated game. While many people dislike how different this game is from other “Zelda” games, including the whole time concept, it is these very differences that make this game my absolute favorite of the series and one of my favorite games of all time. But, first, a quick summary.

In this game, Link ends up in a strange land called Termina, where the moon is about to fall in just three days, thanks to the evil Majora’s Mask that has possessed a Skull Kid. To be honest, while I adore the game, I do admit that the plot is a bit odd, and the way Link even ends up in Termina to begin with doesn’t make a whole lot of sense (which has caused some people to theorize that all of “MM” is a dream, while others go so far as to say that Link is, in fact, dead). In many ways, this game is very different from your typical “Zelda” game, as it actually has nothing to do with Zelda, and there isn’t really even a villain to speak of but a spooky, apparently sentient mask. And as you’d expect, masks make up a big part of the game, many of which can do pretty useful things, including several that can turn Link into a Deku, Goron, or Zora, while others are actually not so helpful. At all. And unfortunately, the dungeons the series is known for are…well, there’s not many of them. There’s actually only four, and while they are four good dungeons, there’s still, you know, just four. The rest of the gameplay is made up of various sidequests, but that’s not really as boring as you’d expect…. It really isn’t.

The Duck’s Top Five: Items from the Legend of Zelda Series

Now it’s the Duck’s turn to list my top five items from “The Legend of Zelda” series (in order from least favorite to top favorite).  I grew up with this series, and it is still one of my favorite series of all time, with the puzzles to solve and the dungeons to explore, not to mention the variety of items you can use, from the ordinary, like the Bow and the Slingshot, to the unique, like the Hookshot and the Lens of Truth, to the bizarre, like the Spinner and the Gust Bellows.  When I thought over my top five items for this post (items from “A Link to the Past”, “Ocarina of Time”, “Majora’s Mask”, “Wind Waker”, “Twilight Princess”, and “Skyward Sword” were considered), several sprung immediately to mind, but a few took a bit more thinking before I could narrow it down to which items I liked the most.  But, I finally succeeded (earning myself a Heart Container for my hard work).  Behold, the Duck’s…list! Guest Post: Zombies are Not Scary

duckofindeed:

A group of the bloggers here at “United We Game” have been sharing posts with each other on the topic of what’s scary in video games in celebration of October and Halloween. Behold the Duck’s thoughts on the topic, originally a guest post on “Cheeese Toastie and Video Games”.

This week I bring to you the second guest post of the month, again on the topic of horror. The blogger I’m featuring this week is the always entertaining and insightful Duck of gaming blog The Duck of Indeed and one of the admins of United We Game. Remember to check out both of those sites for more awesome gaming stuff! Also, remember to check out my post on his blog when it goes up. I’ll reblog it here over the weekend too. Without further ado, over to Duck!

This month, the bloggers over at “United We Game” have been participating in simul-posts most suited to the month that Halloween calls home, where we write guest posts on our fellow bloggers’, well, blogs on the topic of what’s scary in video games.  Unlike many others, the Duck is not very familiar with the horror genre, but I still have…
