Saturday Video Round Up: February 12 – 18

Saturday is back once again and along with it comes a brand new edition of the Video Round Up. It’s back to bring you the best trailers and videos from the past week, so without further delay, let’s get into it, shall we?

It was a big week for Injustice 2 as the upcoming DC Comics fighting game introduced a bunch of fighters to its expansive roster of heroes and villains. Swamp Thing made his debut, followed by another trailer showing off four femme fatales with Black Canary, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Cheetah.

After much success with their Wii U season pass experiment for first party games like Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8, and Hyrule Warriors, Nintendo has revealed that they’re doing another season pass for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While many of you may be worrying that Zelda has always been a complete experience on day one, it appears that Nintendo is not planning on cutting out content and reselling it. Based on the limited information, the post-launch content appears to be additional, and optional content.

I’ve also got new videos for Nier: Automata, Sea of Theaves, Horizon Zero Dawn and so much more after the break, so come check out this week’s batch of trailers!

The full list of videos await you after the jump…

A New Playground for Playground Games?

In 2012, a new envisioning of Microsoft’s popular racing game series, Forza, appeared on the scene: Forza Horizon. Forza Horizon wasn’t simply a racing game, it was an open-world driving game that invited players to explore a vast world in a variety of cars and progress through a series of tasks and challenges. Even though I was only nominally familiar with the Forza series at the time, I tried my hand at Forza Horizon. It didn’t grab me, but I could certainly see the appeal. Being unleashed into a relatively expansive world solely as a car, so to speak, was something different, if not entirely new. (A few Need for Speed and Burnout games pre-date Forza Horizon.)

It Seems Nier: Automata has Some Mysteries to Solve

Nier: Automata is already out next month here in the US. That may be amazingly fast considering just how recently it broke into the wider gaming consciousness, but it’s definitely not unwelcome. In fact, it would be quite nice if more games started up their hype trains a few months before release rather than the now standard 2-3 years. Anyway, the game is coming out soon and thus we have a brand new trailer to to keep it stuck in our brains for awhile longer. You can see it here after the jump. Super Mario Odyssey Trailer: Initial Thoughts

Last week, I discussed my thoughts and concerns on the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.  Today, it’s Mario’s turn for some scrutiny, as we were just recently introduced to the next major Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey.  Let me start by saying that I’m not the biggest Mario fan out there.  The games are great and all, but they’re not exactly at the top of my list.  Nevertheless, I think the new Mario trailer may have possibly excited me even more than the Zelda one.

Considering I am a massive Zelda fan, I had to ask myself why this was, and it didn’t take me long to come up with an answer.  While Breath of the Wild signifies a major departure from the Zelda series, Odyssey marks a return to the Mario games I loved most.  Super Mario 64 and Sunshine gave us large, open worlds to explore, while Galaxy was linear and New Super Mario Bros. were traditional sidescrollers.  In short, I have been waiting for a Mario game like this for over a decade, and I couldn’t be happier! Mass Effect Gets a Pre-Order Trailer

As we advance ever closer to its March 21st release date, more and more details have been dropping for the highly anticipated Mass Effect: Andromeda. There’s still plenty that we don’t know about the game though, with the game’s multiplayer still firmly blocked from our view. Still, just as astronomers make indirect observations of distant stellar objects, we can glean some information from what is otherwise just something meant to show off the perks gained from pre-ordering the game.
