#Listmas2015: My Favorite Yoshies in Yoshi’s Woolly World

Despite any personal issues that I’m still working on with Yoshi’s Woolly World, it’s still one of the best current platformers on the WiiU. Helping that cause, at least as far as I’m concerned, is the fact that in the game you can “knit” together a multitude of different Yoshies, thereby ending up with quite a fun collection by game’s end. Joining in this year’s Listmas celebration, I’m recounting here my favorite Yoshies from the game’s primary levels – six (one from each world) that you get by gathering all in the skeins of yarn in each level. (So not counted here are the special Yoshies you can get from doing extra tasks outside of the main story.)

Merry Listmas everyone, and let’s get to the list!

P.S. Potential spoilers follow, especially since I may discuss different levels to varying degrees. And the reveal of the Yoshies themselves could also be a bit spoilery

P. P. S. All images were taken by me, thanks to the Miiverse’s screenshot function. But they are © Nintendo, obviously.

  1. Hot Cocoa Yoshi (Level 1-4)

It doesn’t hurt that this Yoshi is named after one of my favorite beverages, but as squee-worthy as this game is, Hot Cocoa Yoshi was the first one that actually made me squee over his adorable adorableness and simple, warm color scheme. He simply reeks of chocolate and marshmallows, in a good way! Plus, getting him required traversing the first fortress in the game, which was easy but not too easy.

  1. Flame Yoshi (Level 2-6)

Getting Flame Yoshi proved to be my first big challenge of the game. His skeins resided in a level full of flames and fire, which, outside of water and ice, are my third and fourth least favorite things to encounter in and Mario/Yoshi game. So he remains memorable for that alone. But I also really like his ensemble of darker colors complete with a flash of bright orange and red on his belly.

  1. Pound Post Yoshi (Level 3-6)

In life, there is ugly and then there’s cute-ugly, and Pound Post Yoshi sits squarely in the latter category. Named after the brown, yellow, and green pound posts that pepper level 3-6, his funky colors in a twisty pattern definitely made him stand out from other, plainer Yoshies. But something about the bright green cheeks make me love this Yoshi, despite his 1970s fashion sensibilities.

  1. Lakitu Yoshi (Level 4-2)

In Yoshi’s Woolly World, a number of attainable Yoshies are named after different enemies, and for me, Lakitu win by a nose…or should I say, a pair of eyes! What really made Lakitu Yoshi stand out were his black-outlined eyes that mimic those of Lakitu’s. Just too cute! And it’s also hard to ignore the smiley face on his belly that looks like Lakitu’s happy cloud. Too much!

  1. Alpine Yoshi (Level 5-1)

Of all the Yoshies I’ve gotten so far, Alpine Yoshi is the single one that I want to actually knit someday. I imagine that all the Yoshies were created with the idea that they could be reformed in real life by some creative knitters. I’m not very up on my amigurumi (knitting or crocheting stuffed characters) skills, but Alpine Yoshi makes me want to brush up. He’s one of the first winter-themed Yoshies in the game, and I love his color scheme in blues, complete with a few snowflakes.

  1. Spooky Yoshi (Level 6-5)

I didn’t think it was possible for Yoshi to be at all creepy, but Spooky Yoshi is, and I’m pretty sure it’s because of his all-white eyes. He’s in the typical boo-scary colors of purple and green with a jack-o-lantern smile on his belly – still among the cutest, nonetheless. You find his yarn in the game’s final ghost house that’s replete with Boos. It’s a challenging level and one worth defeating just to add Spooky Yoshi to your collection.

If you’ve played Yoshi’s Woolly World, what are your favorite Yoshies?

    1. Nintendo really did a nice job coming up with a wide array of Yoshies for the game. Though some share a similar theme, they are each unique. And getting ALL of them in the game is a must!
