I see you shiver in antici…pation (of next year’s game releases!)

In about a week, my copy of Dragon Age: Inquisition will arrive in the mail. Between that, Metroid Prime, Pokemon LeafGreen, and whatever else gaming-wise I can squeeze in here and there, I’m pretty much set for the rest of 2014. There’s a good possibility that holidaytime will bring about the addition of the PlayStation 4 to our gaming brood, which, short of having a handheld and a Steam-only PC, should keep my hands plenty busy for a good long while.

It’s with those thoughts in mind that I contemplate here the coming year in gaming. It seem like the “next-gen” moniker is finally crumbling as “next” becomes “now” and the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are more ubiquitous than ever. True that a sizable handful games coming out in 2015 will only be available to those with the new consoles, but that’s the way these things go – eventually we all have to live with our decisions to upgrade or not. And surely the enormous catalog of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games is nothing to balk at. If anything, the Xbox One and PS4 have quite a lot to live up to.

Why Haven’t We Moved On?

Image by Flickr User: Doug Kline (cc)

There’s something different about this generation of home consoles. Not so much in the power or what they can do, but rather in our perception of them. Here we are, almost 10 months since the PS4/Xbox One launched, almost 2 years since the Wii U launched, and we’re still referring to them as “next-gen”. They’re out. They’ve been out awhile. The PS4 has sold over 10 million units; these machines are not “next-gen” anymore, they’re most definitely “current-gen”. Continue reading Why Haven’t We Moved On?

Beginner Tips: Using the Xbox One and PS4 Record Features

To me, one of the best aspects of this new generation of systems is how easy they make capturing video gameplay. For those of you who have been playing games for a while, I’m sure you can pinpoint a few times where you do something great or see something totally crazy happen in a game and only wish you could have somehow recorded the moment to show other people. Thankfully, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One now make this dream an easy reality.

I’m using these features quite regularly (probably more than I figured I would), but I will admit trying to use these features successfully was a little obtuse at the beginning. Certain aspects of these sharing features were either not explained well or just not documented clearly enough. So, in an effort to provide some community service to you all, I figured I’d lend a helping hand and share some tips for both systems.

Have anything else you’d like to share? Let me know in the comments. Continue reading Beginner Tips: Using the Xbox One and PS4 Record Features

inFAMOUS: Second Son Review – Enjoy Your Power

There’s just something great about games that empower the player to be something more than ordinary. Sucker Punch’s inFAMOUS franchise is at it’s best when giving players the tools to go and do what they want in a big open city. With the highly anticipated Second Son now on store shelves, the franchise finally moves into next generation territory and with it comes a brand new game engine, character, abilities and setting for players to play around with. Even with all this new tech powering the title, morality and story have always been a major focus and Second Son is no different, introducing these elements through a more realistic tone and topics centered around the freedom vs security debate.

Is Second Son a worth successor to Cole’s legacy or should it be purged? Full review after the jump.

Well known for their work on PlayStation Network with hits like Super Stardust HD, Dead Nation, and the recently released, Resogun, there’s no denying that Housemarque is a household name among PlayStation fans. With as many top notch games as they’ve put out, have you ever stopped to think how well you really know the developer?

I recently had the pleasure to chat with two members of the development studio, Tommaso De Benetti and Mikael Haveri, who gave me some insight into who they are, what it’s like to work on some of these great titles, and also a hint at what’s to come. It was great to get a peak inside the oldest game company currently in Finland and also what it’s like to develop one of the best PlayStation 4 titles currently available right now. Is it worthwhile to be an early adopter of a new game console? Are early adopters truly important to a console’s long-term success? There are always questions surrounding the launch of a new console generation, but somehow these and others like them tend to be overlooked, but not anymore!

We decided to have a community discussion to try to determine some answers and we’re joined by Ben Lake, Chip (of Games I Made My Girlfriend Play), and Niall Tucker (of Niall’s Ramblings). What did we find? Read on to find out!
