My “Deserted Island” Games — Xbox 360 edition

I don’t know that I’ll ever find the right words to describe my relationship with our Xbox 360. Since picking up its controller some six years ago, we’ve run the gamut of emotions, from adoration to frustration. I’ve not played many games on the console, but those few that I have remain the ones into which I’ve sunk the most hours. I mean, the Mass Effect games alone count for months worth of gaming time. And as I look at my list, it pains me to choose only a handful of jewels among the diamonds. If I could only ever use a single current-gen console ever again, it would be the 360, and that’s despite its propensity towards death. We only went through one red-ring episode, and that was one too many as far as I was concerned. If that were to happen with my 360 on my island…well…I’m sure I could MacGuyver a fix with coconut fibers, sand, and solar rays.

It registers now as kind of odd to me now that we never had an Xbox since we were so on top of the video game consoles of the time. But a close friend of ours owned one, and it was open to use whenever we wanted, so we never actually needed one. I also have to admit that the Xbox was rather strange to me at first. I mean, Nintendo and Sony had been offering the world lots of gaming goodness for awhile, and suddenly, in walks Microsoft with its giant, black box and a new Halo title and I’m just expected to bite? I dunno… That said, I wasn’t about to turn down some new gaming fun when given the chance. So whenever we went over to our friend’s house, the Xbox happened; and among his small catalog of games I found a few that I really enjoyed. (A fair portion of my experience with original Xbox games actually happened later on the Xbox 360.) When it came to choosing games for my island, the choices came down to those games I had played the most, and only four rose to the top.

My “Deserted Island” Games — Playstation 3 edition

Around this time a year ago, our Playstation 3 died. During a round of Sleeping Dogs, the console just quit and started in with the blinking red light — the deadly “red light of death.” We tried to get the thing up and running again to no avail. And since it died with the game still inside, we had to take our beloved machine apart to get it out. It was a sad, sad weekend.  After the PS3 was in pieces, we discussed our options: get another PS3 or wait for the PS4, which was then a mere rumor.  It was a couple months before we finally made the decision to get another PS3. We had so many games already for it, and so many games to start over (since we lost all the old save data…grrrr), it seemed a shame to not give them the chance they deserved. I’ll do my best to keep my PS3 up and running on my island, but my list won’t include Sleeping Dogs…I still feel like it’s somehow cursed.

My “Deserted Island” Games – N64 edition

Of all the systems I plan to cover during this series, the N64 is probably the system I loved the most. I received the system as a gift in the late 90s. With nothing but an ailing SNES at the time, it was the greatest gift I could have received. Through the N64 I experienced a gaming renaissance; and with a Blockbuster nearby that offered game rentals, well…let’s just say I was a very happy camper. As satiated with games as I was back then, on this here island, I can only have up to five games. That was a dumb rule make. Dumb rules!

My “Deserted Island” Games – NES/SNES edition

After completing a lot of day dreaming and soul searching, I decided to combine the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) into one post for this installment of my “deserted games” series. Why? It’s certainly not because I didn’t love the SNES to death, because I did. But as fun as the NES was, we didn’t have many games for it. Could I spend the rest of my days playing Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, and 3? Maybe. But only maybe. So with a list of choices in hand, I had to make some tough decisions. Some were obvious, and others less so. I’m sure at least a couple of my game choices would still drive me bananas in the heat and quiet. And man, does it get quiet on this here island…except for those dang birds that keep squawking! This is supposed to be a deserted island! Just quit with all the noise and help me get this coconut!! Sheesh.
