Chrono Trigger – A History

Chrono Trigger, is a role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix ( at the time Square Soft) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995. Chrono Trigger was designed by Hironobu Sakaguchi of Final Fantasy, Yuji Horri of Dragon Quest and Akira Toriyama of Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball fame.

The game was a commercial success on release and is frequently cited as one of the best video games created. Chrono Trigger changed the standard of RPGS by introducing, seventeen different endings, engaging plot-related side quests, a revolutionary combat system and focused character development. Chrono Trigger has seen ports to iOS, Android, PlayStation and the Nintendo DS. Further cementing its place as one of the best video games.

Following the success of Chrono Trigger, a text based game called Radical Dreams: Nusumenai Hoseki, the game never released outside of Japan. Shortly after Radical Dreams, Chrono Cross released in 1999.   Chrono Cross, as stated by Masato Kato was never meant as a Chrono Trigger 2. Instead it meant to incorporate themes from Radical Dreams, which for westerners made the game incredibly confusing.

For such an amazing game lauded by critics and fans alike, it has seen many ports and additional content, but no actual remake or sequel.  Kato states that Chrono Cross was never a sequel, it is a completely different game. Fans of Chrono Trigger have never seen a return to the series of Chrono Trigger. Developers have expressed interest in returning to the series, but due to politics between freelancers and developers nothing has gone beyond talk.

In the early 2000s, Square applied a trademark for Chrono Break in the United States and Japan. However, a few short years later the trademark was dropped in the U.S.

Most recently, at E3 2015 Square Enix fueled the hype train with a censored video featuring the games they would announce at E3.   Fans of Chrono Trigger speculated if one secrets games would be Chrono Trigger 2 since, Square Enix choose to use “Frog’s Theme”. Its been revealed that the big announcement was Final Fantasy VII.   Although, the announcement of FFVII was huge in many gamers eyes, it could be considered another left down to the Chrono Franchise. At this time Square Enix revealed they are working on a new console RPG, coined “Project Setsuna”. Setsuna roughly translated can be, “a moment or an instant or sadness”.   Little is know about the Project Setsuna outside of a few teaser images and a trailer was recently released, but still didn’t provide any information about the game. Is it a Chrono Trigger 2?

I doubt it.

But wouldn’t it be nice?

At this time, there is no talk about Chrono Trigger and I’m sure that Project Setsuna is not a game in the franchise although it heavily borrows from some Chrono Trigger theme as reflected in some of the artwork for the game.

Will we every see a return to Chrono Trigger?

I remain very skeptical.

But…..

Square Enix decided to re-master Final Fantasy VII, hope might not be completely lost.
