The Hunt Begins Anew!

The hunt is back on everyone! “Hunt the Truth” season two kicked off earlier this week, and wasted no time getting down to business! For those who may not be aware, earlier this year Halo fans were treated to season one of “Hunt the Truth”, a 12-episode podcast chronicling the struggles of war-journalist Benjamin Giraud to expose one of the darkest secrets in the Halo universe. More specifically, Giraud is working to expose the origins of the SPARTANS and the war crimes committed by earth’s military that allowed for their creation to occur at all. Plot aside, “hunt the truth” makes for a fascinating look at SPARTAN lore by giving us the chance to see more the human element in it.

Most of us long-time Halo fans are already aware of where the SPARTANS came from, what it took to create them, and who was ultimately responsible for it all. However, we’ve only ever had the chance to view this knowledge as either historical fact or from the perspectives of those involved. Until now, it has all been told from a perspective of “the ends justify the means”, which is hard to argue with considering who was largely responsible for ensuring mankind’s continued existence. “Hunt the Truth” challenges that perspective. While it is true that Earth needed the SPARTANS to survive the war with the Covenant, the fact remains that the original SPARTAN-IIs didn’t choose to be saviors. They really didn’t have any choice at all, and they still don’t. This is the ‘truth’ that Giraud is fighting to reveal; that is, it was at first.

By the end of season one, the goal behind “Hunt the Truth had escalated. Winning justice for the SPARTANS was still important, but the real target shifted to the ONI (Office of Naval Intelligence) itself. It turns out that what happened to the SPARTANS was only the tip of ONI’s bloodstained iceberg. I don’t want to give too much more away, but I’ll say this: ONI is feared for a reason, and over the course of Hunt the Truth, we find out exactly why that is.

There are currently two entries for the new season available for you to tune into, and I believe it’s safe to say that neither will disappoint. Right away we’re given some much needed answers regarding the events of season one’s cliffhanger, AND we get to see a new side of someone I don’t think any of us were expecting to see again at all, much less right away! As for ONI, we learn that they’re capable of so much more than we were led to believe. This might be the hype talking, but if this first episode is any indication then we’re in for an intense ride this season!

Hunt the Truth is back! If you haven’t taken the opportunity to listen yet, then you’re in for a treat! You can find everything that’s been produced so far right here. Even if you’re not a fan of the Halo games, I still recommend taking the time to experience it. It probably won’t change your mind about the games, but the story offered here is something I think any fan of sci-fi and mystery could get behind.

The hunt is just getting started, so make sure you’re along for the ride!

Quick challenge for my fellow hunters: see of you can tell which character is being voiced by Mark Hamill. (Hint: they weren’t in season one!)

point of this post is to inform that season two is out, give a brief (spoiler-free) synopsis of what’s going on, and provide a little back-information for those who aren’t already in the know.
