My Favorite (Major) Releases Of 2013

Even though 2014 is upon us, why not take a step back from and have one final look back at 2013. This year is going to get pretty busy with new releases soon enough, so the time is right.

2013 was an interesting year from a reporting standpoint as it marked a transition between the current generation of consoles into the “next gen” world of Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Even though we’re now heading into new and exciting “next-gen” territory, there were a number of very strong and fantastic AAA experiences given last year and I’d like to highlight some of my favorites from the year that was. Merry Listmas: Games I Hope to Complete in 2014

When 2013 started, I had a singular gaming goal in mind: complete Skyrim. (Which I did!) Now that I’m facing the start of 2014, I have the same gaming goal in mind, except it involves multiple games. In the past, new years have tended to bring forth crops of new games, and I’ve generally tried to finish any games from the past year by the end of it. Well, that just didn’t happen this year. In fact, I’ve got such a large number of started-but-not-finished titles in queue right now that I’m swearing to myself (and all of you) that, depending on the system, I’m not going to buy new games until the ones that I started from my backlog are totally and fully complete. Or…their main stories, at the very least. So here’s a list what I’ll definitely be playing next year (ordered by system):

November 4, 2010: Kinect motion sensing input device launched
Three years ago today, the Kinect was heralded into this world with promises of fun and fantastic motion-controller play. Code named “Project Natal,” the Kinect peripheral was released both with and separately from the Xbox 360, and can still be found on store shelves today. It utilizes an array of sensors to recognize a player’s gesture, face, and voice.  This motion analysis is then transferred into whatever game the player is playing. Unlike the motion controlled Wiimote for the Wii, no other controllers or devices are needed to use the Kinect.

The Little Things in Games

How often is it that the little things in a game end up being what make or break it for us? Those little details that push a game or its characters beyond being simply entertaining into becoming something memorable and endearing. They’re aspects of the game that don’t get the attention of the more important mechanics such as overall gameplay and story, and it often takes us a couple of play-throughs to even properly notice them. Once they are noticed and understood, couldn’t it be accurate to say that it would be hard to imagine a game leaving as much of an impact without them?

Community Post: The Elusive Stop ‘n’ Swop

The original two “Banjo-Kazooie” games can be rather mysterious, filled with references to the series’ early development and features that were never used in the final versions of the games, but never removed, either.  In fact, I find these two games (the first one, especially) to be some of the most mysterious games I have ever played.  Hands down.  For one thing, who is Captain Blackeye, and why does he appear in a portrait in Mad MonsterMansion?  And what is Bottles’ Revenge?  And then there’s Stop ‘n’ Swop, the subject of this post, a most famous secret if there ever was one (and there was, and it was this one).

Since I actually played “Banjo-Tooie” before “Banjo-Kazooie”, I didn’t yet know of Stop ‘n’ Swop when I first played the series.  Sure, I collected those secret eggs and the Ice Key, having no idea that these related to the previous game, and I saw those pictures in Jolly Roger’s Lagoon (in the same room as Captain Blackeye, as a matter of fact), not being able to figure out what these images were supposed to be showing.  A location from the previous game perhaps?  But, why?  What was the significance of these images in particular? Trust Your Instincts

There’s a saying that I’ve found to be particularly true when it comes to gaming: “You know what you like.” In this age of information many of us have reached a point where what everyone else says about something informs our own opinions. We have so many people out there telling us what games we should and shouldn’t like  that even the most independent-minded of us, who do indeed know what they like, can’t help but be affected.

My Bullshit Review Scale

header_sm

Part of why I read reviews is to decide whether or not I should play/buy a game.  Games cost money and with a regular 9-6 job my time is limited in what I can play.  I have to make that count.  Also, I like reading reviews! If I’m going to play a game from start to finish and then talk about it, I should also post my own formal review of it.  Makes sense, right? But what makes Read on…
