October 21, 1992: The world meets Wario (by name) in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
Though he had previously and namelessly been debuted some years before, the character we recognize today as Wario, famed antagonist to that ever-cheerful plumber Mario, was made famous in the Gameboy titled Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. In this follow-up to Super Mario Land, the evil Wario placed a spell over the inhabitants of Mario Land and took over Mario’s castle. In order to get his castle back, Mario had to find six special coins and face off with Wario.
Since his official introduction, Wario, in his ubiquitous purple and yellow, has found fame in titles bearing his own name (Wario Land, WarioWare), as well as in other Nintendo titles such as Super Smash Brothers and, Mario Party, and Mario Kart. He possessed many of the same qualities of others in the Mario universe, with emphasis placed on his strength and affinity for explosives.
Are you a Wario fan? What are some of your Wario games and appearances? Give us something to talk about in the comment section!
I love the Wario Land series. They are usually some Nintendo’s most creative and funny games. I’d love to see a new Wario vs Mario game, though I think it is time (especially with the Wii U) for Nintendo make a versus (as opposed to cooperative) platformer. I think it would work well!
I’ve only seen Wario in action, but your idea of a Mario vs. Wario game sounds really great; and yes, it’s something that could be tailor made for the Wii U!
Their little feud just kind of went away after the first game didn’t it? Like it never even happened. Speaking of Wario games, did you ever play Wario World?
Wario World? No. But I know it was supposed to be a really fun GameCube game.
