Skylar & Plux: Another 3D Platformer is Coming

It sometimes feels as if traditional 3D platformers are a thing of the past.  Rareware hasn’t made a true Banjo-Kazooie game since 2000.  Naughty Dog has given up Jak & Daxter in favor of Uncharted, while Sly Cooper has more or less ended (it all depends on Sanzaru now…) to make way for Sucker Punch’s Infamous games.  It seems the only people who still make more traditional platformers are Nintendo with the Super Mario Bros. series and Insomniac with Ratchet & Clank.  But now, with the upcoming release of Yooka-Laylee, it seems like this genre might be starting to make a comeback.  While many people are excited for this particular game (including all three of us admins here at UWG), I’m not sure how many people are aware of another upcoming platformer, Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island.

Honestly, I only heard of this game because of the Youtube channel, VTNVIVI, which covers news and speculation for games like Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, and Kingdom Hearts (largely PlayStation exclusives, to my knowledge, with some exceptions).  In fact, I recognized pretty much every series they covered except for this mysterious Skylar & Plux, so I decided to find out more.

Skylar & Plux, it is said, strives to revive the “golden age of platforming” and was inspired by such great platformers as Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, and…yes, even the masterpiece that is Banjo-Kazooie, details I learned from the game’s Twitter page.  The game’s two main characters are a snow leopard named Skylar who was created by the game’s villain, CRT, and she is helped on her adventure by her bird companion, Plux.  There appears to be an island world, a lava world, and a snowy world (I hear the game may only have three worlds, which seems rather small, but we’ll see if that changes in the future), and Skylar seems to be able to gain different items and abilities, including what appears to be an item quite similar to the Swingshot from Ratchet & Clank, a jetpack, and the ability to manipulate time.  From what I’ve seen of the game on Youtube thus far, it looks pretty promising, and I can only hope that this game, along with Yooka-Laylee, might just mark the return of the 3D platformer genre many of us grew up with.  If you want to see this game in action for yourself, here’s the trailer below.

I’m pretty excited about this game, but at the same time, I think it needs a bit more polishing in order to become something truly special.  Of course, the game’s still under development, so there will certainly be plenty of improvements before it’s released.  So, what are your initial thoughts on Skylar & Plux?  Do you think it will help to revive the 3D platforming genre, or is it missing the mark?  Please let me know in the comments.
