YouTube Highlights: June 2016

Another month nearly done; another look back on our month in videos! If you like watching people play games (and be people, I mean myself, The Duck of Indeed, and Hatm0nster!), please do subscribe to our YouTube channel. The month started out with The Duck of Indeed’s new playthrough of Super Mario Galaxy. This unique and now-classic entry into the Mario series is amazingly fun to watch and remains one of Nintendo’s best games in recent memory. Seriously, who could forget Bee Mario!

Day 12: A Game Everyone Should Play

I am slowly making my way through the 30 days of video game topics I started…probably a few years ago, and today we have finally reached…number 12.  I’m not even halfway done yet!  Yikes!  Well, this topic involves a game everyone should play, and I had to put careful consideration into which one I would pick.  Not only do I have a lot of great games that I would definitely recommend to others, but I wanted to make sure my choice wouldn’t also be used in other 30-day topics in the future.  After careful consideration, I ended up going with a game that is very special to me, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. Have We Lost Something?

This year’s E3 was quite exciting wasn’t it? It may not have had that definitive moment that’s always characterized the best instances of the annual trade show, but I think it’s safe to say that we’re all walking away from it quite eager for the coming months and games to arrive. In particular, as I watched the trailers and press conference announcements, I found myself reminded of just how far gaming has come in the last 20 years. The visual leap has been nothing sort of dramatic! I mean how many of us playing Super Mario World back in 1990 would have ever thought that we’d be playing games that looked so very close to reality? Heck, how many of us would have thought that VR would become the technology of the future? Gaming has grown outside of the visuals too though. Indeed, modern games are more complicated (and visually stunning) than they’ve ever been. It’s excellent! Complexity comes with a price though, and I can’t help but wonder if perhaps games have lost something in the realm of scope. Continue reading Have We Lost Something?

Making Nice with the Twilight Princess: Update #4.1

Isn’t it about time for more action with Link and the fight against darkness? I’ll say it is! Because between my last update and now, I think I’ve made pretty good progress in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. And by “pretty good,” I mean that a couple more dungeons are finally in the bag. Don’t believe me?  Well, read on my fellow Hyrulians!


So…Morpheel. Oh, Morpheel, that dastardly Lakebed Temple boss. This boss battle is where I remained stuck at the end of my last update. I could not for the life of me coordinate my Wiimote movements enough with the Iron Boots and the Clawshot to get anyway with Morpheel. In fact, I became so incensed with the &^%$# Wiimote and my gaming non-skills that I had to take some time off from the game.  As is the way things go sometimes, when I came back to the game, and despite my nerves, things didn’t go all that badly. The key for me was to quit overthinking things. Like, with Morpheel’s first tentacled form, I didn’t necessarily have to be right up against his traveling eyeball to grasp it with the Clawshot. And with his second form, I didn’t have to swim up his nose (not that you could without being sucked in), so to speak, in order to latch on to make my attacks.

New Details Revealed for Zelda Wii U

I am not typically one to follow news of any kind, video game news included.  From time to time, however, a tidbit of knowledge catches my eye, more often than not relating to the select series I hold nearest to my heart.  One of those is The Legend of Zelda.  Games from this series are released more and more infrequently these days, and so it is all the more exciting that a new installment is being developed for the Wii U (and the NX, whatever that is…).  This news we have known for a while now, but aside from some screenshots of a truly impressive looking, open world, I don’t think any of us knew all that much concerning the newest game of a much loved franchise.

While looking up the game’s release date, I managed to find out a few new things about the Wii U’s first true Zelda title.  First of all, the title has been revealed to be Breath of the Wild, which I personally find to be a rather curious choice.  At this time, I also saw a new image showing Link…climbing a mountain?  Further research, and I discovered that this game is to have a very large, open world to explore, far larger than that of Twilight Princess.  We would also have more freedom to complete the game as we saw fit, as dungeons can apparently be completed in any order.  This particular detail is something I had been hearing about for some time, how they have been meaning to change the formula for the series to allow for more freedom.  I suppose now they have decided to put it into practice.  (This is also supposed to be the first Zelda game to feature voice acting.  I can’t say I’m happy about that, but perhaps it will turn out to be a good thing in the end.) The P.T. Vacuum

It’s been two years now, but it seems that the specter of P.T. yet looms. After the playable demo for the now canceled Silent Hills hit, the gaming populace was enthralled by the idea. It wasn’t just going to be a first-person horror game, it was going to be the first-person horror game to bring the genre of psychological horror back into its full glory! A great many of us were psyched,  and just as many had their hopes crushed by the project’s cancellation. The idea of P.T. has yet to depart though. Once the world got a taste of what a game like that could be, we were loath to give it up. Petitions, indie-developers, triple-A publishers, and possibly even Kojima himself were/are working towards bringing that idea to fruition. P.T. is going to happen in some way, shape, or form; it’s just a matter of who’s going to make it happen. Continue reading The P.T. Vacuum

New Games, New Surprises from E3 2016

Every year, people who enjoy video games get excited for E3. It’s one if the year’s biggest events in terms of learning about brand new games and updates to ones previously announced. If every video game player could attend E3, they probably would, but the fact is that only a small majority get the chance. However, thanks to the Internet and the magic of livestreams, E3 happenings can easily reach the masses. This year I got to watch more of E3 live than I have in years past, and there was plenty to get excited about. While it was great to see lots of new entries into existing franchises like, among others, The Legend of Zelda, Mass Effect, Injustice, and DisHonored, as well as happy notes on games already promised, like Cuphead, We Happy Few, and Yooka-Laylee, there were also lots of new surprises, or at least they were (mostly) new to me. With that in mind, here’s my rundown of several new titles that may just make it into our game stash some day, some way.
