The First Seventeen Minutes of DOOM 3

I played DOOM. I played DOOM II. Both games were simply tremendous. I’ve repeatedly tried to play DOOM 3 since getting an Xbox copy of the game years ago, but…I…can’t. Oh believe me, I’ve tried repeatedly, but I have a really hard time getting past the game’s first stage because it’s just too much. Too scary, too stressful, too dismal, too everything. So for my final spooky silly poem (there’s still time to submit your entries!), I give you this testament to admitting that I’m a big scaredy-cat when it comes to DOOM 3.

It’s dark, I walk,
I don’t dare talk
in the passageway.
It’s cold and dank,
almost rank,
this base where science plays.

No one’s around.
But wait…a sound —
oh, it’s just a machine.
I have no way,
no place to stay,
should I hear a scream.

I see a man
with tools in hand
mumbling to the air.
He says “Don’t go!
You don’t want to know
the evil that lurks in there!”

I pay him no mind
as I must find
the source of all things wrong.
This facility on Mars
has haunted scars
where man does not belong.

I go down a shaft.
(I must be daft
to follow my command!)
A scientist warns,
and then he scorns
attempts to save this land.

We gotta go!
I tell him so,
but there is no time.
The demon portal
that fears no man mortal
has manifested its crime.

The fire that spews
can’t be eschewed,
it envelops all.
It takes men
again and again
in each and every hall.

The scientist possessed
is not impressed
with my need to escape.
I panic, then kill
in a moment so shrill
it makes my goal take shape.

I must save this base
from a horrid fate.
I’m the only one who can.
This single room
can’t become my tomb.
I start to make a plan.

As I head to the door
something stops me once more,
but there’s nothing in my way.
It’s my internal fear
So monumental and clear…


…maybe this isn’t a bad place to stay.

  1. The internal thoughts of every First Person Horror player in that last portion right there:”I need to get out of here!” *sees the monster(s) outside* “…I think I’ll defend this spot instead…”

    Also, as a Doom fan, what did you think of the DOOM movie? The first person sequence in particular?


    1. The first person sequence was, for me, the most interesting part of that very bad movie. And it’s not that it was particularly compelling, but it was jarring (in a good way) to see a sequence like that in a movie. The Doom movie itself was boring, unnecessary, and completely out of whack with the game’s actual story. Typical, as far as game-to-movie translations go.

  2. Nice job. Sounds like a pretty creepy place. My favorite lines were: “This facility on Mars has haunted scars where man does not belong.”
    And I liked the ending. Sometimes our greatest obstacle is fear, which reminds me of the first time I faced the Flood in Halo and hid in a hallway, too terrified to continue on. Based on this poem, I think I’d have the same response to Doom 3.

    1. I’ve never been too scared to finish a scary movie, but something about experiencing scary moments in games is totally different. I guess it the “being there” factor, like you are actually in the scary moment and not just watching it happen. I have managed to progress a little past the whole demons-rising point in the game, but not much farther. I just lock up in fear and would much rather hide than shoot things.
