Two games from the original Sly Cooper trilogy down, one more to go. That’s right, everyone, I have just started Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves. I am writing this particular post two hours into the game rather than just the usual hour, and…I’m not quite sure what to say yet. Okay, first off, this game is really similar to Sly 2. The controls are largely the same. The graphics are the same. (I think Carmelita’s voice actor has changed again, though.) Honestly, I don’t have a lot to go on right now, so I’m going to devote part of this post to pure speculation as to what I think is going to happen. Newcomer Alert: The Completion of Sly 2: Band of Thieves
I am now officially halfway through the Sly Cooper series! I recently completed Sly 2: Band of Thieves and have gotten 100% both in the game itself and in collecting all of its lovely trophies. If only these were real trophies, I’d have quite the collection by now. Since my last update, I completed both episodes in the very spooky Prague, after which I headed to the chilly wilderness of Canada to stop the fiendish buffalo Jean Bison (I never get bored of saying his name) from chopping down the forests. Last of all, I completed the final chapter on the parrot Arpeggio’s blimp and defeated the final boss. Done and done. I had a really great time playing this game, and I was so happy to find that it was much longer than the original, which ended just when I was really getting into it. And now that I’ve seen everything there is to see in Sly 2, it is time for my most positive and most negative thoughts about the game. Newcomer Alert: Halfway Through Sly 2: Band of Thieves
Well, I’m now 49% through Sly 2: Band of Thieves and have recently started chapter 5. I explored a nightclub in Paris and defeated its owner, Dimitri the iguana (since when are iguanas purple?), the first member of the Klaww Gang (which I’m certain bears no relation to Klaww from Jak 1…). I braved the jungles of India to stop the tiger Rajan. And I visited a very spooky location in Prague, the specifics of which I won’t reveal, as I don’t want to spoil any bit of the story. Though, the events that took place at the end of episode 3 didn’t surprise me one bit, even though I’m pretty sure it was meant to be a plot twist. I actually more or less saw it coming since one of the very first cut scenes of the game. But, once again, if you played the game, you’ll know what I mean, and if not, I don’t want to spoil a thing for anyone who has yet to play these games. Newcomer Alert: Initial Thoughts on Sly 2: Band of Thieves
Now that I’ve completed the very first Sly Cooper game, I can safely say the series is starting to grow on me, and it was with much excitement that I began the second game in the original trilogy, Sly 2: Band of Thieves. I am currently an hour into the game, and though that may not seem like much time to form any real opinion of it, I already have some initial thoughts to share with you guys so far.
I noticed first off that the graphics have improved, and though the controls seem to be largely the same, you can no longer look around using one of the left trigger buttons. While it is possible this has been moved to the R3 button, clicking an analog stick like a button has never felt like a natural thing to do, so I have yet not tried to confirm this. I do it when I’m forced, but that’s it. I was pleasantly surprised to see Sly’s pals also playing a more active role in the game so far, as in the first game, you only received advice from Bentley from afar from time to time, and Murray sometimes appeared in minigames. I was also very surprised at how Murray’s personality seems very…different from what it used to be. There will probably be more thoughts on that later. Carmelita’s voice acting also seems to have more feeling than it used to, as well. Continue reading Newcomer Alert: Initial Thoughts on Sly 2: Band of Thieves
Newcomer Alert: The Completion of the First Sly Cooper
I’ve done it, I’ve completed my first Sly Cooper game (at a baffling 83%; I did get 100% of the PS3’s trophies for the game, however)! I found all clue bottles and opened all safes. I…never really used any of the extra moves I learned in those safes, but still. It was a satisfying feat, nonetheless. Since my last update, I have also completed several more locations and beaten their respective bosses. Fighting Mz. Ruby was an aggravating experience, to say the least. I had no trouble keeping up with her weird, little button-pressing game. The game just didn’t like my timing, I think, so I kept inexplicably dying and being forced to start over. The Panda King, fought in the high, snowy mountains of China, was easy. The final stage…well, since they kept the fifth member of the Fiendish Five hidden so long, I won’t say much about who it is for anyone who, like me, is also new to the series. Simply put, the final set of stages was tough. And the final member of that dastardly group of criminals was by far the coolest. Newcomer Alert: Halfway Through the First Sly Cooper
It’s time for my next Sly Cooper update, everyone, as I work my way through the Sly Collection on the PS3! I’m now 53% through the first game, which seems like a perfect spot to update my thoughts. Well, I have defeated Sir Raleigh the frog in Wales and Muggshot the bulldog in Mesa City, and I am now braving the sinister swamps of Haiti in the hopes of reaching Mz. Ruby, the voodoo-practicing crocodile. At this point, I can safely say I have a pretty good idea of the gameplay involved in this game, which is somewhat of a big deal for me, as I honestly had no idea what to expect from the game when I first started it, making me slightly less of a newbie. Newcomer Alert: Initial Thoughts on Sly Cooper
More often than not, I come late to a popular game or series, sometimes as much as 10, 15, or even 20 years after its release. Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VII, the Ratchet and Clank series, just to name a few. As a result, I often feel at a disadvantage when other people are discussing great games I have yet to even place in my gaming bookshelf. Nevertheless, the power of positive thinking has made me realize there is actually a very wonderful thing about being a chronic latecomer. If you ever wish you could go back in time and relive your first moments with a great game over again (I certainly have…I’d love to relive Banjo-Tooie), well, I’m doing it right as we speak. Hooray for slow pokes like me!
Over a decade after its initial release, I have finally got around to trying for myself the Sly Cooper series. I was familiar with the games for years, but I just never played them, for whatever reason. I then found that the PS3 collection of the first three games was only about $10 brand new on Amazon. That’s $3.33 per game! Plus a penny! How could I afford to remain a stranger to the series for one minute longer? Continue reading Newcomer Alert: Initial Thoughts on Sly Cooper
