I’m not sure if I can really call myself a Nintendo fan at the moment. The me of the past was certainly a Nintendo fan, and I still love all of my Nintendo games. My opinion of the company is a little different though; deteriorating further and further with each passing year until they became a little more than a joke in my eyes. I don’t want to dislike them. I was really hoping I’d see something incredible at their recent Switch presentation. I wanted to see something that would bring them back from the brink and show me a hint of the games maker they used to be. How many enemies in the Legend of Zelda series do you consider to be actually frightening? There are plenty of bizarre and unsettling creatures to encounter: ReDeads, Wall-Masters and Dead Hands perhaps being the most notable. They creep us out and perhaps even inspire a little shiver, but can we really call them frightening? I don’t think so, because their core idea is understandable. A ReDead is just a zombie, a Wall-Master is just a mindless monster in the form of a hand, and a Dead Hand is an amalgam of reanimated corpses driven by hunger. We know what they are and what drives them, so they stop short of being truly frightening. Even the main villains of the series, though terribly powerful, don’t succeed in frightening us because they’re characters. They have goals and desires we can understand. This can be said about just about all Zelda enemies save for one: Majora. There is no explaining Majora, and that scares me.

If you hadn’t caught on already, we here at United We Game hold The Legend of Zelda series close to our hearts. We also enjoy this time of year when thoughts turn towards celebrating Halloween, especially in games. This year, we decided to combine the two into a new posting theme: Zelda-ween! Over the next three weeks, Hatm0nster, The Duck, and I will be offering up spooky posts on spooky themes in the Zelda series: enemies, dungeons, and unintentional scares. It’s going to be spook-tacular!
This November marks the tenth anniversary of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Earlier this year, Nintendo released an HD version of the game on the Wii U. Although Breath of the Wild is what’s in the news, it’s really been the year of Twilight, and that’s a big part of why I decided it was finally time to give the another chance. The other impetus behind me playing Twilight Princess was Xenoblade Chronicles. Completing that game last year renewed my interest in the Wii itself. I had long ignored the console in favor of non-motion control games, but Xenoblade Chronicles showed me the best the console had to offer. So I felt like it was time to give the Wii another shot, a shot with a game that had long burned in my subconscious as one that I simply had to complete: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
Having now finished game (late, at least according my initial goal of finishing the game by mid-May…oh well), I want to offer up something of an epilogue. Something that will allow me to put the game to rest for good, because…well…tl;dr I loved the game, but I never want to play it again.
