New ‘Avatar’ Game in the Works

Eight years after the release of the massively popular film, the world of ‘Avatar’ will be getting the video game treatment once again. What’s more? The studio tackling the project will be none other than Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, the minds behind 2016’s Tom Clancy’s: The Division.

Details about the game are currently quite scarce since the project is still in the very early stages of development. What we do know at this point is the kind of experience that the team behind it hopes to deliver with the game. “It should be the ultimate experience where you actually go to Pandora and live your alternative life on the moon”, said Magnus Jansen, creative director at Massive Entertainment. It should also be noted that James Cameron agreed to the project after seeing a prototype of the game running Massive’s Snowdrop engine. So, hopefully the game will be visually stunning at the very least. Only time will tell.

Ubisoft has gained a somewhat unfavorable reputation of late due to the great many exploration/sandbox games its published. For better or worse, The Division was able to buck that “Ubisoft formula” and offer something a little different. It was a step in the right direction, but was not enough to save the game from developing several major problems of its own. Optimistically, Massive will learn from the mistakes of The Division and release a game that any ‘Avatar’ fan would be happy to play.

What do you think of ‘Avatar’ getting a new game? Do you think Massive is up to the task?
