A dirty fight it may have been, but victory was all that mattered! Though the game is set to be returned to its original owner, I still have it and have been fighting the urge to go back, level up some more, and defeat a bunch of high-level monsters. All just for fun, of course.

I think you hit the nail on the head in saying XC is “consistently good.” Consistency is really key to XC’s overall value and success as a game. Even when you’re off on sidequests, it never feels like you’re wasting your time. Even the most lowly of fetch quests offers up some sort of challenge that helps you become a better player. And save for the lengthy cut scenes, there’s not much downtime – you’re always doing something, progressing, leveling up. I do wish the main story, at least, had been shorter, but I have no regrets.

I forgot to say that I have to agree about the endgame. Very difficult and frustrating if you’re underleveled, and if you’re attempting to rush by going straight from boss to boss then you will almost inevitably be underpowered. I gave up at the end boss, final phase, and went back to the pre-endgame save to level up, and ultimately ended up leveling right into the 90s fighting all the unique monsters and finding secrets!

It’s funny, with you and and the chaps at A Most Agreeable Pastime playing this game, I’m reliving my experiences with Xenoblade all the time lately🙂 And no bad thing either! I also found the game to be extremely cathartic from start to finish, and had a similar epiphany several dozen hours into XC when I realised just how enormous in terms of the quests, the world, etc it all is. I’ve never really played big Western RPGs or MMOs before but clearly XC owes a debt to those kinds of games, and kudos to it for freshening up the JRPG formula and making an old genre feel fresh to me again.

All in all I would liken playing Xenoblade to reading a really amazing book that happens to be a very thick paperback. Its size is intimidating and off-putting (for some anyway) at first, but once you get into it you find the unique gratification of exploring something that is incredibly broad in scope but remains consistently good, even excellent, throughout. I recently got my relative a Wii as a present just so he can play this game, and I’m hoping he’ll agree with me!
