For whatever reason, I never really saw it as cheating, rather, they helped me enjoy certain (difficult) games a lot more than I would have.

I wish I had time to look for secrets on my own, but like you, most I find either inadvertently through the Internet or by randomly coming across them in games. (And when they happen randomly, I often don’t recognize them as secrets.) That’s just how it goes when you can’t devote lots of consecutive hours to gaming anymore!

I only found secrets by randomly stumbling into them on the Internet, and so I also found myself fooled by a good number of hoaxes. I believed Luigi was playable in Super Mario 64 for the longest time.

I never really used cheat codes, though. I only used one once in Hunter: The Reckoning-Redeemer because it was a far easier way of unlocking all the playable characters than doing it the official way.

For United We Game’s April writing challenge, I offered up this post which contains several real games secrets and one I made up. Maybe I could have worked harder at fooling everyone (all you smarty pants know your games, haha!), but it was fun making the sly attempt at trickery. Still, the secrets I listed remain some of my all-time favorites. Speaking of which, I could really go for some super-ultra-fast Street Fighter II Turbo right about now!

(Though, if I had heard about something like that back when, I would have no doubt tried it!) The GTA IV sign is one of those true delights/grounding realities that make you feel both giddy and stupid at the same time. :)

The Mario 64 secret is so simple yet so enjoyable. There’s nothing about it that’s particularly spectacular, and it’s not as if meeting Yoshi transforms the game in any special way, but he’s just such a pleasant face to see after you’ve toiled through getting all the stars. It just felt like a really nice “ending” to a great game.

Had a total blast back in the day playing the game at “full speed.” Too bad it didn’t make me a better player…haha.

Oh yes, those Oinks were rather skittish, weren’t they? I remember loosing them all the time because I wanted to grab them and take them out of their pen. The game would have none of that.

I guess I wasn’t being sneaky enough, but yeah, no go with my Castelvania fantasy of playing as Maria in the original. :) Would have been pretty cool, though.

Maria is playable in the Saturn port if I remember rightly but the secret sounds really weird. Anyway it’s either that or the GTA IV sign, but since you linked the photo from a wiki page for the game it can’t be…can it?

I loved the Mario 64 secret. I knew what was going to be up there on the castle roof, but it was still really magical. Best of all apart from meeting Yoshi and getting the message from him was using the flying cap around the grounds. It feels so good, I love turning the camera sideways to give it extra cinematic flair. The only other one of these I’ve done is the Street Fighter 2 Turbo one. 10 stars is totally absurd, I agree. 4-6 stars is the sweet spot.

Also, major point for mentioning the Lil’ Oinks! I loved those things as a kid! It was just so entertaining watching Oink after Oink pop out of those eggs. I also wound learning the hard way what happens whe you try to approach your favorite Oink: They all scatter! All my Oinks gone in an instant…definitely the worst that’s ever happened to me in a Mario game. :(
