It’s the expectations that can really hurt a game in the end. I’d like to blame the ads, but they’re just doing what they’re supposed to (sell the game). More honesty in gameplay trailers and such would be nice too, but as you said it’s really up to us to find if out a game is going to be suitable.

After all, who knows what you like better than you?

A game isn’t bad just because it’s not the best thing to have ever existed. Of course, we all love to find new games that become new favorites, but as long as a game is fun and, after having played it, we don’t regret how we spent those hours, then I guess that’s good. I had really high expectations of Chrono Cross, but now that I’ve played it, I’m not a huge fan. Yet, is it a bad game? Absolutely not. It’s better than most games out there. It’s just not what I expected. That’s my problem, though, not the game’s. The ads are going to make us think even the worst game is going to be fantastic. It’s up to us to be realistic and research what it really is going to be like before judging it.

You’re right. It was definitely a good game to be sure, but it wasn’t all that great. In fact, I’d say it was the weakest in the series thus far. It just had a lot of small weaknesses that kept adding up, not the least of which was the weak legend they were chasing that just wound up being some poisoned water rather than something that hinted at the supernatural like the other two games.

In both cases, I thought that the previous games in those series were nothing short of excellent. (I’d readily count Fable 2 and Uncharted 2 among my most favorite games ever played.) Because both “2” games were incredible successes, the hype machines that were created for both “3” games were astounding and overwhelming. Fable 3 was going to “change video games as we knew them,” while Uncharted 3 promised to bring Nathan Drake’s amazing story to an amazing conclusion. Both fell very short of those expectations, as well as my own. But that’s not to say they weren’t good games — both Fable 3 and Uncharted 3 were perfectly fun and had their high points. They’re my perfect examples of good but not great games.
